Building the utility network in our communities
to serve new and existing subdivisions.

Underground - Shallow Utilities

The Shallow Utilities Division within Volker Stevin Contracting was initially established to provide an additional service allowing us to offer turnkey subdivisions to our private developer partners. This service involved the installation of power, gas, telecommunication, cable television, and street light wire buried in a common trench “Underground Residential Distribution” (URD) facilities in new subdivisions.

Since inception, our shallows division has grown to include the design, and build of Fortis URD installation, design and build of City of Calgary Streetlights, urban natural gas pipeline installation (poly and steel), 5G, and telecommunication installation. We are also proud to be an Enmax-approved 4-party URD contractor.

14th Street Urban Pipeline Replacement

Calgary, Alberta

About

This ATCO project included the installation of a combination of 610mm steel and 323mm poly from 75th Avenue to 90th Avenue SW, with a partial removal of an abandoned Conoco Phillips condensates line.

Since part of the scope of work included crossing the 14th Street open cut to install the new 323mm gas main, this would have a significant impact on both 14th Street and Heritage Park. A challenge included busy workday traffic during the week and weekend traffic into Heritage Park. Typically installations such as this would occur on a weekend; however, VSC proposed a drill shot versus open cut technique. Upon further discussions with ATCO, it was decided that approx. 220m would be drilled to install a 406mm steel casing under a 900mm force watermain, followed by pulling the poly pipe back through for the installation.

Service Scope

As Prime Contractor, Volker Stevin Contracting (VSC) was retained to install steel and poly gas pipeline. VSC was required to remove 300mm of the median, edge-to-edge, north of Heritage Drive. Once the install of the new gas line was complete, VSC paved the median to match the existing roadway for a future bus rapid transit project that is slated to begin in 2018.
